Dental Wellness: Frequently Asked Questions #12: What are the effects of fluoride?

Jacob Trager DDS ©
The effects of fluoride are cumulative. Our exposure to dietary fluoride exceeds 100 parts per million (ppm). For example, toothpaste in aluminum tubes adds 1000 to 1500 ppm. Mouth rinses add 230-900 ppm. Fluoride accumulates in the brain and its effect on behavior is directly related to levels in the blood. Fluoride effects the sensitive developing brain tissue with severe negative effects on children. Studies conducted in the mid 1990's in China showed decreased IQ in children in areas where fluoride was added to the water.
